What Is The Storage Capacity Of A Server?


Storage capacity simply means the size of disk space available on a storage device. This is the measure of the amount of data a computer system can contain. For example, a system with a 200GB hard drive can only store about 200 gigabytes worth of data.

Depending on who is asking and the purpose, the term web server can be interpreted in two versions; software or hardware. 

As hardware, what a web server does is to store a web server software alongside every component file that makes up a website. The data store can be HTML documents, JavaScript files, CSS stylesheets, or even images. The server is what brings the website online and allows the exchange of data.

Like software, a web server is what controls the level of access web users have to hosted files. It is known as the HTTP server.  It is a server that understands URLs and HTTP. 

So going by the definition of what storage capacity means and what a web server is, 

It is clear that there is no definite answer to the question; what is the storage capacity of a web server. This is because a web server can store as much website info and data as possible. However, if you are trying to know how many web server resources your website needs to run smoothly. The answer becomes more straightforward. These resources are CPU or processor, hard drive (storage), and memory (RAM). When choosing a web server be it ServerMania or any other, these are the three things to put into consideration.  

Web Server Processor (CPU)

The CPU is the part of the web server that handles all processing activities as well as arithmetic and logical activities. For efficient performance, your web server needs to have fast and powerful processors that can be either single or multiple. This enables the server to carry out several operations simultaneously. The way the CPU is used depends on the kind of hosting the server is providing. For shared hosting, different servers get to share the same processor. However, for dedicated hosting, there is no sharing. Here, the server works with a specific single processor or multiple processors. Therefore when choosing a web server, choose one with a multi-core processor. The higher the core, the better. 


This is what provides temporary storage for the data that is processed in the CPU. When compared to a hard drive, the RAM performs a faster read/write operation than the latter. However, the hard drive is more like permanent storage. When a web server has adequate memory, it eliminates the need to continually access the hard disk memory which is relatively slower. 

The Hard Drive 

This is the permanent storage place of the webserver. It determines the number of files you can store on your server. As mentioned earlier, these files can range from HTML files to images. You can choose the amount of hard drive space you need based on the storage space your website needs. For example, an e-commerce site with lots of products and data will require more hard drive space than a personal blog. 

How To Determine The Hard Drive Size Of A Web Server

When trying to determine the hard drive size of a web server, there are certain factors to put into consideration. These factors are the operating system, control panel, applications, security, database, email, and many more. 

Assuming that a webpages’ average size is 25kb. This means up to 40 pages can be stored on a hard drive size of 1MB. For a total of 4000 pages, you will then require a hard drive size of 100MB. 

When calculating the storage requirement of a website with a database and email files, you have to put the number of users into consideration. Let’s assume that an application is 100MB and it has 2000 users with each requiring 1MB. This means that you need a hard drive space of 100MB + (2000 x 1MB), that is, 2100MB or 2.1GB. Similarly, for a website with 100 email accounts with each requiring a disk space of 250MB, you will require a total hard drive space of 25GB. That is 100x250MB. 

Finally, when choosing a web server, you should choose one with redundancy features and easy upgrade as your business grows.
