Steps to Becoming a Better Audio Engineer

Audio Engineer

An Audio Engineer needs to have the right skills to take on a lot of work to help make sure the sounds they get are amazing and will not disappoint. This job may seem simple, but there are a lot of things that can influence the sound of your music, and an audio engineer needs to know how to manipulate these and make an amazing sound for their clients.

You can let all of those creative juices come out when you work as an audio engineer, but you need to make sure you are doing it the right way. If you would like to become an audio engineer, there are a few steps that you will need to follow first. Some of these include:

Create a Good Set Up

The first step that you need to learn about is creating a great setup for the music. Learning how sound will travel and how it behaves within the room you plan to work in will be key to helping you get the right sound out of the microphone.

There are different issues with sound that you will need to deal with. This can include flutter echo, reflections, and some of the other acoustical problems. If you do not learn how to work with these, it can ruin the sound that you would like to get in the finished product.

Audio engineers understand that a good set-up is going to go a long way in creating a creative and comfortable environment that works. This may include you experimenting with the sounds a bit until you get the right one for you. When you get it done the right way, you will have an environment that is a catalyst for great audio and great productivity at the same time.

Use the Right Microphones

The next thing to consider is the microphones that you utilize. Knowing how microphones work will be so essential when you are doing some of the audio that you need. There are different types that you can choose from those that are bigger or smaller, each one bringing its own strengths and weaknesses to the table.

An audio engineer needs to be able to select the right microphone to get the job done well. If you choose one that is cheap to save money, it is likely not going to provide you with the exact sound that you would like. But you do not necessarily need to get one that is the most expensive either.

Do some research and find a good microphone that is going to serve you well. This can take some time, but it will make a huge difference in the sounds that you are able to get as an audio engineer.

Learn the Basics of Editing Audio

Editing is a part of this career that many are going to overlook. It is not as glamorous or as fun as some of the other components, but it is still very important. It will take some good listening skills to make sure you edit the sound correctly, including having the ability to cut out all of the extra noises or to create some of the realistic fades that the music requires.

If you want to do a good job at audio editing, then you need to really make sure that your editing skills are great. A song that is badly edited can have abrupt starts and ends of regions, issues with click-track noises, and a guitar hum that is too loud. If these show up in the song, it is a really big sign that an amateur put it together.

Editing audio is something that you will need to practice. It takes time and skill to master, but the more that you do it, the easier it will become. Sure, this can seem tedious on some songs, but the end result will be amazing.

Try Some Simple Mixing Tricks

When you first get started with audio editing, start with some of the simple mixing tricks. There are a lot of complicated ones you can do as you get more familiar with how it works, but you will find that most of the songs that you want to do will be fine with the simple tricks. There is no need to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

To start, you need to work on levels, panning, EQ, compression, and depth. And in the beginning, you will want to do the work in that order. This means, do not jump ahead to the EQ or the compression before you can set the proper levels. And do not start pushing things back with the reverb or the delay before each instrument will find its own place in the spectrum.

For the best results, you need to take it one step at a time. You may be excited to try out a few different things at the same time, but this often ends poorly as a beginner. You need to take it one step at a time and see how great it can make your sound.

Learn How to Prepare the Mix for Master

If your goal is to just mix your demos and you want to later showcase some of the songs on your own website, then you should learn some of the simple mastering tricks to help master your own tracks.

However, if your goal is to create a record that has a professional mastering in it, then make sure that your mixes are prepared ahead of time for the mastering engineer. There are many things that you may not consider as a beginner, but as you prepare and practice, you will find that your mastering skills will get better.
