Swiss watches may have a competitor in the market after all. According to Strategy Analytics research, the sales of smartwatches in the holiday quarter of 2015 have turned out to be higher than those of Swiss watches. This is the first time in the history of smartwatches that the industry has taken over their luxurious competitors and all thanks to Apple.
According to the report, there were 8.1 million shipments of smartwatches while a total of 7.9 million Swiss watches were sold in the fourth quarter of the year 2015. Ever since, Apple introduced its smartwatches in April 2015, the sales of smartwatches have increased dramatically. This can be seen by the fact that there is an increase of 316 percent in the sales of smartwatches in the Q4 of 2015 as compared to Q4 of 2014. Moreover, most of the sales made during this time period are of Apple smartwatches; out of the 8.1 million units sold 5.1 million units belong to Apple which makes it the market leader by selling 63 percent of the smartwatches, with Samsung following it by selling 16 percent of smartwatches. In the fourth quarter of 2014 a total of 8.3 million Swiss watches were sold however, in the holiday quarter of 2015 the sales decreased to 7.9 million. So, a decline of 5 percent can be seen in the sales of Swiss watches in this time period.
The overall decrease in the sales of Swiss watches is basically due to the fact that Swiss watches have not be able to keep the interest of their consumers. They have also been slow to react to the tech watches. Consumer’s interest has shifted towards smartwatches because they not only tell you the time but they also let you make phone calls, check your emails and stocks, play games and can even check your blood pressure. However, the sales of Apple smart watches have also decreased. 75 percent of the sales in the second quarter belonged to Apple while only 63 percent belong to it in the fourth quarter.
