Tesla is the company that changed the auto industry forever. Elon Musk’s beloved corporate baby has managed to make some of the most prestigious and technologically advanced cars ever made. Their electric cars have been the inspiration for many. But Elon may be getting some tough competition in the near future from the Porsche Mission E.
Porsche Mission E
Porsche has announced their new goal. That goal is to launch a new series of electric cars dubbed the Porsche Mission E to compete with Tesla by 2020. The company is said to be hiring about 1,400 people to work on this project.
The concept car is said to have two motors and all-wheel drive. This means that the Mission E will have the power to run at 600 horsepower. Like Tesla cars, the car will run on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that will be placed along the bottom length of the car under where the driver and passengers would be placed. This helps in the equal distribution of weight across the car. The car would charge with a wireless charger placed on the floor, let’s say in ones’ garage, much like a Samsung wireless charger or the Apple Watch. There is also a port on the side of the car for regular charging like the Tesla Model S. Although this charging port is placed on the front-left side of the car.
Recharge Time and Range
Porsche claims that the Mission E will recharge up to 80% in just 15 minutes. This gives the Porsche Mission E 250 miles of driving range. Compared to the Model S, which gives about a 270-mile driving range at full charge, the Mission E will give a 310-mile driving range at full charge. The Mission E can go from 0 to 62 in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 150 mph.
Even with all these impressive features, the most impressive feature of them all is the design. It really looks like a Porsche. Like all their cars Porsche has put a lot of work into the design of this new model.
The four doors of the car open much like building doors and have a frameless part for the windows. One of the weirdest things about this car is that there are no exterior mirrors. For a rear view, one can look at the lower-left and lower-right corners of the windshield where a small display shows what is being captured by a back camera. This display can also be used for safety and maintenance notifications.
The dashboard and the control center have some really cool features. The dashboard menu can be controlled by the driver’s eyes with an eye-tracking device. This will allow him or her to open a certain instrument by simply looking at it and pressing a button on the steering wheel to select it. The whole dashboard moves along with the driver. For example, if the driver pulls the seat forward, the dashboard will move with it.
I can’t wait to see what new features Porsche will add to the production model of the Mission E. The Mission E will likely be released in 2020. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Tesla’s response to this new concept car is.
