Apple’s September 7 event was full of amazing surprises. But one that wasn’t so amazing for many was the removal of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Apple has since admitted that this wasn’t an easy decision. However, one that must be done in order to ‘move on’ from the past. This mindset of Apple’s can also be applied to when they changed the 30-pin port from the iPhone 4S to a Lighting port on the iPhone 5.
With this change came the introduction of new products. The iPhone 7 and the 7 Plus will come with EarPods that connect to the Lightning port instead of the regular 35mm headphone jack that is nonexistent on both phones. Apple is not completely heartless. They decided to include a 35mm to Lightning adaptor for those who still wish to use their old, wired headphones or earphones.
Apple’s new AirPods are a new way to listen to music on your iPhone 5 or later, iPad Mini 2 or later, Apple Watch, or iPod Touch 6th generation. They also connect automatically to all your Apple devices, even Macs, with just a touch of a button.
With one touch, the AirPods connect to your device using Bluetooth. Using various sensors and the new W1 Apple-designed chip, the AirPods sense when you take them off and pause automatically. AirPods produce AAC, high-quality audio, which is something that Apple definitely got help with from Beats.
Siri can also be activated with the new Apple AirPods. Just double tap on one of them and Siri will pop up. You can use Siri to control music, answer calls, and even ask for directions. AirPods automatically detect when you’re talking in order to reduce background noise and hear you more clearly.
The wireless buds come with a charging case which allows you to add up to 24 hours of battery life to your Apple AirPods, which normally last 5 hours playing music. On a device so small, this amount of battery life is very good. You can also get up to 3 hours worth of listening time from only 15 minutes of charging with the charging case.
Apple’s new wireless earbuds will be available in late October for $159. For now, we’re stuck with the Lightning EarPods.
