  • Increased urine output with the possibility of electrolyte imbalance as a result. 
  • A reduction in the body’s metabolic function.  

The demineralization of water through distillation can alter the delicate balance of sodium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and fluid in the body. Therefore, minerals discharged through sweat or urine will not be replaced if a person drinks distilled water.

However, as most developed world population eat a rich, varied diet of beverages and foods, there is no danger of drinking distilled water. 

Distilled water vs. the purified water 

Although all distilled water is purified water, not all purified water is distilled water. Distilled water is a purified water type that has undergone a process to remove all minerals and contaminants. 

On the other hand, purified water is without contaminants and chemicals but may still contain some minerals. There are three ways in which water can be purified:

  • Deionization: This process gets rid of the mineral ions and salts in water. 
  • Reverse osmosis: This method involves water filtration through a unique material known as a semipermeable membrane. Salt and contaminants are removed from the fluid when it passes through this material.
  • Distillation: This process involves boiling water and condensing the steam back into liquid to rid the water of all impurities and minerals.

Common uses for distilled water 

Distilled water has many uses and benefits. A person who consumes distilled water is drinking water without additives. It also helps the body get rid of waterborne pathogens. Disease-causing bacteria cannot survive distillation. Tap water contains low levels of harmful chemicals allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Distilled water gets rid of all these elements. 

Distilled water is commonly used in automobiles and household appliances because it is devoid of chemicals. Popular uses for distilled water include:

  1. Inverter batteries
  2. Steam irons
  3. Car cooling systems
  4. Laboratory equipment and experiments
  5. Watering plants
  6. Aquariums (In such circumstances, mineral supplements should be added to fish food)
  7. Medical devices such as the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device that helps combat sleep apnea.
