Ikea, Apple And ARKit Making Buying Decisions Easier

A Partnership With Ikea

Tim Cook mentioned a partnership with Ikea in an interview with Business Week.

“We’ve talked to IKEA, and they have 3D images of their furniture line. You’re talking about changing the whole experience of how you shop for, in this case, furniture and other objects that you can place around the home. You can take that idea and begin to think this is something that stretches from enterprise to consumer.”

On AR he said, “When people begin to see what’s possible, it’s going to get them very excited—like we are like we’ve been.”

In a previous article on ARKit we mention this and now, it’s really coming.

Digital Transformation

Ikea’s executive Michael Valdsgaard is the digital transformation manager at Inter Ikea Systems. He also spoke about the partnership with Apple utilizing ARKit. He described an AR app for iOS that will allow potential customers to map a room in their home. They can then place 3D virtual representations of furniture in their home. This will help you get a feel for how an item will look in your living space. This will save you time before ever leaving the house for a trip to the nearest Ikea showroom.  The idea is to aid customers in making “reliable buying decisions” when considering big ticket items from Ikea.

The app is expected to support between 500-600 products when it launches. More products will follow. The company will use the app to showcase new products as they become available.

Michael Valdsgaard said, “When we launch new products, they will be first in the AR app.” “This will be the first augmented reality app that allows you to make reliable buying decisions,”

Selling products directly in the app is also a possibility but that will not be the focus in the initial release. There are endless possibilities for Augmented Reality besides entertainment. Ikea will be breaking new ground with this new technology from Apple.

There is a team of twenty persons working on the 3D modeling of the furniture in Älmhult, Sweden. This is the location of the first Ikea store is located. The AR Ikea app is expected to be released in the fall. This will forever change the way you shop for furniture. Let’s go shopping!
