At the CES 2017 press event, Mate 9 was revealed by Huawei. Amazon’s very famous Alexa will be pre-installed in this smartphone which is available for sale in the US now. According to Huawei, Alexa would give ‘a natural, convenient user interface’ to perform required tasks.

If you have already purchased the device, you will be getting an over-the-air (OTA) update for this. The company is working with Amazon to ‘develop a rich voice activated consumer experience’.

“Response to Huawei Mate 9 has been extremely positive, resulting in numerous industry awards and accolades,” said Zhendong Zhu, President, Huawei Device USA. “With Mate 9, we set out to improve every element of the smartphone experience, creating a dynamic and powerful device that takes a big step forward in what consumers expect in a smartphone. We’re excited to introduce the Mate 9 flagship device to the US market.”

On its official website, Huawei boasts the phone’s revolutionary speed saying, “Now you won’t slow down, thanks to the new Kirin 960 processor and intelligent Machine Learning algorithm. This ground-breaking interplay between hardware and software means your Huawei Mate 9 is born fast and stays fast.”

About its “Smart Anticipation” Huawei says, “The Mate 9 automatically learns user habits to build app priority. The system anticipates the user’s next moves to prepare resources in advance. This process is run on the phone, not the cloud for better performance and privacy protection.”

The Huawei Mate 9 is a very simple looking handset, it has a huge 5.9-inch display built into the handset similar to Google Pixel XL and LG V20 in terms of the display. In the device, you get a USB Type-C port flanked by machined speaker grills. The top offers a 3.5mm headphone jack with IR port for remote control functionality.

A SIM card slot located on the left-hand side can handle two Micro-SIMs or one Micro-SIM and a microSD memory card. For the music lovers, the smartphone offers ‘Stereo+’ mode, in which the phone will automatically boost the audio volume of the earpiece when in landscape orientation. It does not have dual speakers, however.

Mate 9 has the Android 7.0 with EMUI 5.0, which is great news. You certainly do not have to worry about the battery life here as this phone has a 4,000mAh. You can use Gmail, Snapchat, Twitter, Slack, Chrome, and Spotify tethered via Bluetooth to a vehicle. Use the camera, and messaging and sleep without charging your handset. You will have some battery left to use even then.

The phone was launched in Munich and is designed to understand the daily habits of the user. Prices for the phone vary a bit, it is $599 in the US and 699 Euros. Overall, it’s good value for the money.
