How to Pick a Smart Lock For Your Home

Smart Lock

Most of us can probably agree that keeping our homes safe is a big priority for us.  There’s a reason pretty much everyone locks their doors when they leave, and we don’t leave valuables out for people to see.  Even if it doesn’t necessarily dissuade robbers, the chance that it might is enough to give us a bit more peace of mind.

If you didn’t know, burglaries are some of the most common crimes in the United States. While you can read more on how those sorts of statistics are gathered and what the figures are on this page, the main takeaway here is that it’s something we need to be vigilant about.

How can we up our security game, though?

Wireless Locks

We’ve all been there – fumbling around in the dark, looking for our keys, and cursing the fact that our purses or our pockets are seemingly an endless abyss.  It’s super frustrating, especially if we’re in a rush for some reason or another.  These days, though, we can make a lot of things in our homes “smart,” or connected to wireless networks in some manner.

This does include the locks on our doors, interestingly enough.  It may not have even been something that you were thinking about before.  However, there are all sorts of them out there on the market.

The question is, how do they work?  It’ll depend on the one that you get, but on a general level, they usually connect to our smartphones.  Seeing as those are pretty much glued to us, it’s a fairly safe way to ensure that we can always get inside.

Keyless Entry

Of course, the main draw of a smart keyless door lock is that they add another layer of protection to your home if you want it to.  Some people even opt to have both a normal key lock and a smart one, just to bolster their security.  Certainly, that’s not always going to be necessary, but it can help us feel safer sleeping at night.

Since you can find all kinds of different ones in all shapes and colors, you also can get one safely knowing that it doesn’t have to be an eyesore.  You can find one that blends in with your door or at least matches your aesthetic with relative ease.  Are they worth it, though?

Are they Worth it?

Many of them are not overly expensive, which already gives them some points in most people’s books.  Again, a lot of it really will come down to the features that you’re aiming to get and the appearance.  The plainer it is, the more affordable it will be (generally speaking, at least).

Some of them have Bluetooth and even fingerprint identification options, while others utilize other methods to unlock the mechanism.  There are even ones with video cameras to allow you to see who’s at the door if you hear a knock or something like that.

Given how much crime goes on here in the States, it’s hard to say that a few hundred dollars aren’t worth the cash to keep ourselves safer.  You can see some more of the statistics here, https://www.proquest.com/openview/d253643019bbe46de7c45d94fb8de687/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=1821025.  It’s clear that we should be prioritizing personal safety as well as the security of our families.

Whether you’re adding this style of lock to what you’ve already got or you’re replacing the key one with a new smart one, you’ll be keeping your home safer from intruders.  You can even get several different ones and have multiple layers of extra protection if you really want.  Of course, that’s not exactly necessary though.

At the end of the day, try not to let the whole “smart device” aspect of this scare you off of looking into one.  They’re not hard to install or use and come with plenty of instructions and a manual too.  So, it’s not like you’ll be struggling on that end of things, that’s for sure.

Having a keyless security option for your home can bring you some much-needed peace of mind in a hectic world.  If you haven’t considered one before, this might just be your sign to do so – especially seeing as there are so many choices!
