Database Refresh with TapForms 5

TapForms 5

Mac Databases

Mac users have been challenged when it came to finding a suitable not to mention affordable database replacement for FileMaker or Bento. Having the ability to easily create attractive databases for all of your data is the reason so many Mac users were so fond of Bento. Data that can be synced across all your devices and accessed easily from your Mac, iPhone or iPad is something that Mac users have come to expect. And the best part is being able to do all this at an affordable price. When Bento was discontinued it left a void but an alternate solution surfaced.

The solution I’m talking about is TapForms fromTap Zap Inc. For me, TapForms has been a really good decision. We did an article on the earlier version of TapForms back in October 2015. This new version clearly justifies another mention.  It is easy to create forms and build databases. It’s convenient without the heavy initial cost and endless paid updates like we had with FileMaker.

TapForms 5

I haven’t looked back since I switched to TapForms back in 2015. TapForms 5 was released in August but I did not upgrade right away. TapForms 5 is a significant upgrade and for new users, it is well worth the $49 price. Migrating data from the old version was a breeze. Queries are fast and the multiple sync options are robust. An improved user interface with a Calendar view, Photo Grid view and a Map view that I really like.  There is also a formula edit screen that allows you to format numbers in your calculation fields.

I have multiple databases and a couple of them exceed 2000 records.  One includes images and it is still fast and responsive.  The latest version, 5, provides four sync options; iCloud, Nearby, IBM Cloudant and Apache CouchDB. Cloud syncing is now automatic in both directions in version 5.  I have used both iCloud and Nearby without a hitch.  Nearby does not require a cloud account, which I really like.

The original version of TapForms was very similar to Bento but TapForms 5 shows how this app has matured and it really stands on its own.

There are versions available for Mac, iOS and Apple Watch
