Celestron SkyPortal, Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

Like many of us, I have always been fascinated with and in awe of the cosmos. The technology available to us today makes it possible for anyone to travel the universe from our backyard with a modern telescope or from our living room with an iOS app. Celestron is a leading manufacturer of telescopes and the developer of astronomy related apps that allows us to see what was not possible not very long ago. SkyPortal is a new app from Celestron that lets you explore the universe with a telescope or from your armchair.

Celestron’s newest planetarium app, SkyPortal is a suite of astronomy features and content that redefines how one experiences the night sky. Exploration of the Solar System including 120,000 stars, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and dozens of asteroids, comets, and satellites are at our fingertips with this beautiful app.

If you are lucky enough to own a compatible WiFi enabled Celestron telescope you can automatically point the telescope to any object in the SkyPortal database and view it with great detail after a simple calibration process. Without a telescope, you have access to a wealth of information on the objects in the sky.

In Compass mode, you experience the current night sky on your device with real-time synchronized display of celestial objects based on your exact time and location.  Zoom in on celestial bodies to reveal beautiful NASA photos.

The Planetarium feature allows you to plan your observations with a list of the best objects for any given night. You can animate celestial events like eclipses, and transits.  You can view hundreds of photos and listen to very informative audio narrations, about four hours worth.

You can move forward or backward in time (up to 100 years) and view simulations of the night sky at different points in time.  You can also browse the sky with Night Vision turned on, which is easy on the eyes after dark.  A double tap on a celestial object not only provides, basic information but also shows the visibility and celestial coordinates, physical parameters, and orbital parameters of the object. Swipe to reveal more information including history and mythology.

This software really enhances your stargazing experience and it’s FREE!

SkyPortal is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.
