Advantages of Electric Cars

Electric cars are gaining lots of traction on the roads these days with new models like Tesla 3, Chevy Bolt and the new Nissan Leaf. The first thing a person normally considers while evaluating the pros and cons before buying a vehicle is the cost.

Electric cars are available almost at the same prices as cars that run on gas. You can get a very decent electric car for $30,000. But that is excluding the tax rebates and other benefits the government offers which really drives the price down and they end up being cheaper than their fuel counterpart. The U.S government offers a $7,500 federal tax rebate for the purchase of a new electric vehicle. Many states like California offers further incentives up to $5,000 for electric car owners. That alone amounts to $12,500 in savings.

Furthermore, the fuel cost is greatly reduced. An average American spends $2,000 – 4,000 on gas annually. Some people argue that electricity doesn’t come for free. Their point is valid but it is also a fact that electricity comes a lot cheaper than fossil fuel. In terms of fuel cost, if you drive the Honda Civic 15,000 miles per year for five years, the cost for gas can be as much as $10,057. For the same mileage, a LEAF will cost only $3,000 for electricity.

Electric cars are much easier to maintain as compared to conventional gas-powered vehicles. As no oil is used to lubricate the engine, the oil changes are pretty much eliminated. Similarly, belts, filters and spark plugs that need occasional replacements are eliminated. The brakes on an electric vehicle last much longer and the pads need only seldom replacement.

It is a lesser known fact but most of the energy released by the burning of fuel is lost. Only a fraction of the energy is actually utilized in driving the vehicle. Almost 60% of the energy is lost as heat and another part of it is lost through external factors like friction and aerodynamic drag. Electric Vehicles have a much higher efficiency rate and are up to 90% efficient.

If you have driven or ever rode in an electric vehicle, you would know how quiet and peaceful the ride is. The engine makes practically no noise and you can clearly hear the hum of tires running on the road. This lets you drive in peace and focus more on your driving, with a distraction-free environment as compared to the gas vehicle, which can kick up quite a racket at times.

No Emissions

Almost the whole population on Earth agrees that polluting the environment is a bad thing. Yet, they are willing to overlook that fact while driving. Electric cars don’t even have a tailpipe because there are no gases to release as a byproduct of combustion. These vehicles are also known as zero emission vehicles. Owning an electric vehicle is not only easy on our pocket but it also helps you in keeping the environment healthy.

Pretty soon, we might see a majority of the population converting to electric vehicles. Their acceptance rate is already very high as compared to just a couple of years ago and it is increasing at an exponential rate.
