Reason Behind Amazon Halting The Sale of Apple TV

Amazon is known for selling almost everything available on the physical market and that is what makes it great. But that changed last October when the electronic commerce and cloud computing company removed the listing of Apple TV and Google Chrome cast from its website. This is the case since last October, at the time no explanations were offered. But the silence was broken on this touchy subject last Tuesday during an interview at the Code Technology Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

When the subject was brought up Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had this to say,

“[W]hen we sell those devices, we want our player—our Prime Video player—to be on the device, and we want it to be on the device with acceptable business terms,” Bezos said “You can always get the player on the device. The question is, can you get it on there with acceptable business terms?”

Even though he didn’t mention those devices by name, it was pretty clear he was referring to the Apple TV and Google Chrome cast. By “acceptable business terms” Bezos is likely referring to the 30% cut Apple takes for in-app purchases. More or less both companies came to a disagreement and Amazon thought discontinuing the sale of Apple TV was the best move at the moment.

Some are also speculating that this halt may also be because Apple TV competes with Amazon’s own Fire TV set-top box and Fire TV Stick entertainment device. But that is highly unlikely as Amazon has a history of selling devices that compete with its own indigenous electronics. It still sells the Barnes & Noble Nook and other e-readers even though they directly compete with the Amazon Kindle.

Whatever the case may be unless Amazon and Apple come to a compromise, we won’t be seeing Apple TV on Amazon.com anytime soon.
